4 February 1789, 1861, 1944
Busy day. George Washington was elected president in 1789, the Confederate States of America was formed in Montgomery, Alabama in 1861, and Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin met in Yalta to prepare for post-war Europe.
As far as I know, Washington is still the only president not to belong to a political party (maybe Adams as well?). I don't think Washington was a superb president, but we were lucky to have him at the time, because a lot of people wanted him to be president for life, and he said no. Nice precedent to set.
Harry Turtledove has written a series of books about the world if the CSA had won the Civil War. It's an interesting thing to think about, although most of the theories seem to think the South would have become a wonderful, racially tolerant world power. I doubt it. How exactly were the states that seceded today going to keep up with the new manufacturing powers in Europe and the North?
Yalta is Yalta. FDR and Churchill kind of got screwed by Stalin, setting the stage for decades of Cold War.
