Charles Dickens is born.
I've only read one Dickens book: Great Expectations, and I've read that more than once. It's a decent enough book (I read it twice for class, so it wasn't my choice either time), but nothing spectacular - although Miss Havisham is a cool, creepy character. I own A Tale of Two Cities and Bleak House, and will get around to reading them eventually (my alphabetical reading list is quite strict). I'll have more of an opinion then.
Also on this date in 1950, the United States made a huge blunder: the recognized Emperor Bao Dai as ruler of Vietnam rather than Ho Chi Minh, who desperately wanted Western recognition. How'd that work out?
