21 January 1793
King Louis XIV is guillotined.
Wow, big day. Louis had been under house arrest for two years, and the monarchy had been abolished five months earlier, so there was really no point in keeping him around. He mounted the scaffold and said, "I die innocent of the crimes laid to me. I forgive those who have caused my death, and I pray God that the blood you are about to shed may never be visited upon France." Presumably he said it in French. And how did that prayer work out for you, Louis? It took a bit to behead him, apparently - his neck was a bit fat. Humane execution, my Aunt Fanny! The French liked the guillotine so much that it was kept in use until 1977!
