Remember, remember ...
It's Guy Fawkes Day, by the way. Everybody chant:
"Remember, remember the fifth of November,
gunpowder, treason, and plot!
We see no reason that gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!"
In case you have no idea what I'm talking about, read about Guy Fawkes here or here or here or here or even here. If you are so interested you need to read more, Antonia Fraser's Faith and Treason: The Story of the Gunpowder Plot is an excellent, very readable history of the whole sordid affair. Of course, then you should definitely go read V For Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, one of the best graphic novels ever. Read it before the movie ruins it!
A few years ago a British friend of mine burned an effigy in a corn field outside of Portland. We all went and had cider and a grand old time. She designed the effigy to look suspiciously like her husband. Burn an effigy today to celebrate! It's fun!

Or buy one of these puppies, and blow stuff up!
(Responsibly, of course!)
It was too cold for me to go anywhere, so I watched three different fireworks shows out my window last night. It was awesome!
Remember
John Lennon
Remember when you were young?
How the hero was never hung
Always got away
Remember how the man
Used to leave you empty handed?
Always, always let you down
If you ever change your mind
About leaving it all behind
Remember, remember, today
And don't feel sorry
The way it's gone
And don't you worry
'Bout what you've done
Just remember when you were small
How people seemed so tall
Always had their way
Do you remember your Ma and Pa
Just wishing for movie stardom
Always, always playing a part
If you ever feel so sad
And the whole world is driving you mad
Remember, remember, today
And don't feel sorry
'Bout the way it's gone
And don't you worry
'Bout what you've done
No, no, remember, remember
The fifth of November
I remember that some reviewer of the POB album said that the 5th of November had no particular meaning. I always thougght that was very funny.
