Look at me, breaking the news! I just happened to have on ESPN when they made the announcement. I'm actually glad Chicago didn't get it. The Olympics have never been held in South America, and wouldn't you rather get "man-on-the-street" shots of impossibly attractive women walking along the beach than shots of fat guys drinking beer?
Chicago will be happy too. It would have been a money loser, and those who would have benefitted were the people of means.
ReplyDeleteAs a native Chicagoan, I would like to say that I am personally proud the city didn't get it.
ReplyDeleteEspecially since a lot of people I know were really behind it...and quite frankly, it wasn't my favorite flavor of Kool Aid.
(That and...well, that energy could have been spent fixing schools, working on public transportation, etc).
I have read a lot about how economically crippling it is to the cities that host the games, as Beijing is the latest one to see no real windfall from it. It makes me wonder why anyone would want to host them. It's very weird.
